Frequently Asked Questions

The MOT scheme is a road safety test designed to ensure that all cars, motorcycles and light goods vehicles more than 3 years old are properly maintained and safe for UK standards as set out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

It is a legal requirement for all vehicles over 3 years old to be tested, and hold a valid test certificate, every 12 months. It is the responsibility of the owner or driver of the vehicle to ensure that it is examined at least once a year at an authorised MOT test station to make sure that they comply with certain important requirements of the law.

Remember- the test certificate relates only to the condition of the testable items at the time of the test and should not be regarded as evidence of their condition at any other time; nor should it be accepted as evidence of the general mechanical condition of the vehicle.

If your MOT has expired you are not allowed to drive the vehicle, or renew the road tax. Your insurance may also be invalid. Please get in touch as soon as possible if your MOT has expired so we can get you back on the road.

There are over 20 safety checks carried out during an MOT examination. These include, but are not limited to: Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), Lights, Fuel system, Exhaust systems, Suspension, Brakes and Tyres. For more information on what exactly is tested, please click here.

Please be advised, that an MOT is not the same as a service, and the vehicle is not inspected for the general mechanical condition. An MOT only certifies that the vehicle was safe for the road at the time of testing. You should still have your car regularly serviced and inspected if you notice anything wrong with it.
If your vehicle fails it’s MOT, you are required to have the failure items rectified, and then re-present the car for a free re-test within 10 working days. After this time, a new MOT is required, which will be subject to the normal MOT fee. In many cases, we can provide you with an estimate for the required work. However, you are under no obligation to have the work carried out by us. So long as the work is done to the required standards, we are happy to re-test the vehicle free of charge.

As of May 2018, new rule changes were put into force by the DVSA regarding the categorisation of MOT failures. For more information, please visit the DVSA website here.
